Educational Workshops: Edible Art

The opportunity to provide an engaged and inspirational learning experience is something we are passionate about. The goal of our fun and educational workshops is to inspire children’s creativity, by allowing students to connect learning to their own passions and interests in a co-curricular programme.

We incorporate The Western Australian Curriculum STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)/STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) into our teaching methods which are inquiry-based and student-centred.  As STEM grows in importance within our schools, our children develop a variety of skills that are essential for success: critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, to name a few.

Language and Literacy

  • Follow age-appropriate step-by-step instructions, both verbal and written
  • Evaluate, review and apply information correctly
  • Acquire new vocabulary to use in the correct context
  • Use of this vocabulary in a tactile environment will help reinforce the learning experience

Science

  • Gain an understanding of fondant being classed as a solid matter
  • Effects of temperature: change in shape and texture
  • Mixing/changes in colours: children with a passion for chemistry will find great delight in this
  • Cover various concepts: dissolving, floating, sinking/rising
  • Exposure to problem-solving: failures are the perfect opportunity to reinforce this
  • The activity also gives an opportunity to talk about history and where fondant comes from

Technology

  • How technical design serves as a practical function
  • Discuss the use of computer graphics in the culinary arts
  • How technology has upgraded our tools/equipment in the kitchen

Engineering

  • Discuss structural principles: strength/weakness in their creations
  • Discuss creative planning: finding solutions for any challenges
  • Encourage a more creative and innovative thinking process

Mathematics

  • Construct two-dimensional and three-dimensional creations
  • Strengthen their understating of shapes and sizes
  • Reinforce number concepts/vocabulary: counting/volume and ‘more than’/‘less than’
  • Using correct measurements: ratios/quantities
  • Experimenting with colours: forming secondary from primary colours
  • Use sequencing to follow the step-by-step instructions
  • Exposure to various shaped cutters and modelling tools

Visual Art

  • Art is a valuable technical skill for communication and expression
  • Facilitates creativity and imagination along with learning new decorating skills
  • Provides diverse opportunities especially if students enjoy creating delicious art
  • Applied knowledge with the use of visual aids leads to deeper learning
  • Edible art provokes a high level of engagement, because, well it’s fun and it’s food

Hand-Eye Coordination and Fine Motor Skills

  • Developing good bilateral coordination skills
  • Improves hand and finger strength
  • Develop existing fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Spatial perception and planning skills
  • All senses are stimulated as we allow students to explore ingredients and equipment, to engage in a whole sensory learning experience

Emotional and Social Development

  • Build confidence and a sense of achievement
  • Communication and teamwork: learn to share, take turns and enjoy a team building experience
  • Problem-solving: investigating how the ‘pieces fit together’
  • Freedom to think critically, creatively, and innovatively
  • Opportunities to fail and try again in a safe environment builds resilience

Food Hygiene, Health, Safety & Sustainability

Testimonials

All our children loved participating in the Ksquared Kreative cupcake class at our holiday club which was held at St Stephen’s School.  Kelly & Kelly are friendly, engaging and great with the kids. The children were so proud of their creations and we highly recommend Ksquared Kreative for this fun activity.

Laura Hurley, Children’s Events Coordinator.  Winterfest Holiday Club

Kingsway Christian College After School Care loved having Ksquared Kreative with us for our incursion during the school holidays. The children enjoyed making fondant toppers for their cupcakes.  Kelly Lee-Bell and Kelly Robertson-Kay were very helpful during the sessions showing the children how to use different tools and how to model the fondant into different shapes.
